I know this question is way out there...but hey...so am I Confused I started looking into this at another forum about a certain butcher block oil is "long oil" Then I thought how this would/could apply to water-based.

As I understand, short/medium/long oil describes how much resin is contained in an oil?

Therefore the cured hardness of the oil is as follows:

short = hardest
Medium = hard
long = soft

My question:

1. What is the point of this rating system?

2. Does this apply to water-based coating, so would your em6000 be "medium water"

3. In solvent based world, does this rating system apply to resins in any oil? For example, can tung oil be a short? Or linseed oil be medium? does this apply to any oil and its certain resins?

4. Should we even concern ourselves with Short/Med/Long, if so, how do we find out from you coating manufactures?
