|
|
Trying to finish a cabinet black using em6600. Its an oak plywood with poplar trim. Trying to get something like a black gloss piano finish.
When I called to order was told I should use 2 coats of em1000 sealer then as many coats of 6600 to build up finish and then 2 coats of clear gloss.
Sprayed sealer using a basic rockler hvlp with 1.5 tip. Waited over night and then tried spaying em6600 with 1.5 tip. Getting very little spray and switched to 1.8 tip which gave me almost to much but no black color. It sprays on clear with 1 shelve just a few light black steaks.
Please help with any idea s Thanks |

| Stirred up the em6600 good and checked with the viscosity cup of my sprayer. Got about 55 seconds so I swtched to a 2.0 tip and got a good black spray. Was able to get 6 coats on today and will put 2 coats of clear when I get a chance. It looks good not a glass piano class finish but will work. The oak grain from plywood shows but its sollid black and will match the speakers it will be next to. |

| You have to call into the office to make the order. Make sure your gun will atomize really thick paint, almost as thick as interior latex. My low pressure guns had alot of trouble with the viscosity and I ended up having to use my airless with a 414 tip. |

Thanks Jonathan.
I'm Using a Devilbiss hvlp G-Plus (http://www.autorefinishdevilbiss.com/products.php?pg=1 ) with various tips (from 1.0 to 1.4mm ) on EM6000 up to the 9000 series without any trouble… actually love it !!
Would you say my 1.4mm tip would be the fit or I should thing buying bigger ?? ( 1.6 & 1.8 are available !?) Never tried interior latex with my guns !?
BTW, what is the viscosity level of this 6600 sealer !?
Thanks, Robert |

| Have not measured the viscosity. I have heard that with a pressure fed you should go with a 1.8 and with a gravity fed you should go with a 2.0. I do know that it is far more viscous than any of the clears. Your devilbiss should do better with the thick stuff than my asturo ssp did, however It did shoot alot better through the ssp after thinning about 10% with distilled water. Do know that the 6600 is not topcoat rated and should be clear coated. |

Sorry for this late reply…. I was out !
I’m thinking, first hand without yet consulting either Geff or anyone at Target, unsing the 6600 as a base ( +/- 4 coats ) then tone some reg 6000 with some black dye to give it sustain & depth for a few top coats ( +/- 2-3)….TBC & to be followed !!

Trouble in paradis !!
Got this EM6600 black ( EM6628) few weeks ago ( beginning may ) and never open it before today !!...and to my surprise, this is nothing I’ve ever seen !@
Give & take it’s a heavy 250sec on my Ford 4 cup !!!???!!!
Calibration test before = 10sec w/water
4 test with this 6628, ½hr interval = all +/-250sec
Calibration test after all these with water and not cleaned cup = same 10-11sec !
By the way, room temp at 74F and humidity level at +/- 60%.
JEFF….. What’s this my friend ??
Call this “black” honey ….. not acrylic pigmented lacquer
What should I spray this with ??
I’m in deep %$?# !!....as I have no more extra time before delivery !
Can anyone tell / give me some advise !!

Robert,
What size tip sets do you have for your spray gun? _________________ Innovation Driven By Vision |

Hi Jeff,
Thanks for your reply on a Sunday !!
Basically, all available one from Devilbiss, from 1.0 to 1.8 (http://www.autorefinishdevilbiss.com/products.php?pg=1 )
But Jeff, What about this 250sec viscosity ?
I’ll need to call you this morning for some “live” solutions as time is no longer on my side…. I’m going to be late for delivery….crunch time

Hi again Jeff…
Called but was told you’re out for the day !
Left a message with my N° to call back.
Would really appreciate receiving a call back ASAP , since another issue has come up this time with a 5G pale of EM6600 received from the same order.
(I realize also you’re out and have other issues to deal with but….)
Thanks in advance for your time !

Robert,
The engineered viscosity of the EM6600 Black Lacquer is 70-75 ku, which is very heavy and not meant to be measured through a Ford Cup or a Zahns Cup smaller then a Zahns #5. do not confuse the viscosity of the clear EM6000 with that of the White EM6500 and Black EM6600. These tow lacquers require a much higher viscosity to maintain pigment dispersion.
I suggest that you use a 1.8 or 2.0mm tip set for spraying the EM6600 with a pressure feed gun. You can use a 2.0 or a 2.2mm tip in a gravity gun but it will be slow going.

JEFF, thanks for this clarification.
One of the Problem I have, is nothing to compare or measure with this “KU ? ”.
Have charts comparing Poise, centipose, stokes, Zanhs, ISO, DIN….etc, but cannot find this KU !?
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not confusing viscosity of EM6000 with EM6628.
I may incorrectly explained myself, my new shipment of EM6000 has by it self viscosity discrepancy vs what I’m use to have ?
Sorry to mix two issues in this thread…..
Back to my EM6628, I have dissolve it a little bit with some EM6000 and spraying it with a 1.8 tip…..flows beautifully now !!
Let tell ya, this is going on MDF, and I hate MDF…. but at the same time, I’m spraying on some various veneer panels for test results, and so far this is VERY VERY nice on wood grain.
Nice quality mix you offer there Jeff, like this VERY MUCH !
Thanks, Robert |

No photos to share yet…. But needed to say thanks to Jeff and this forum for the support !
Finish a couple of week ago these commissioned pieces in piano black and yesterday night had to visit again the customer to pick up another order ( goes to tell they are V-pleased with the end result ).
After a total combine of 14 layers ( EM6628 + EM6000) and using 3M perfect-it polishing steps, this is as close to a piano black in polyester you will ever archive…..lots easier.
This is truly not as durable and resistant as polyester, but sooooo easy to work with, forgiving and to polish ( after proper cure time).
Plus, it makes it a little more affordable to other who wishes to get this piano black without the cost of associated to have it done in polyester…. As long they are advise & all fully understand, production lacquer is & will never be as durable as polyester !!
Recommend this 6628 to anyone and will use it again.
Cheers, Robert |
