9000 SERIES SUPER-CLEAR POLYURETHANE: Application Methods

All surfaces to be finished must be clean and free of oil, dirt, dust and contamination that may cause fish-eyes or poor adhesion. Clean surface with denatured alcohol or fresh water. Allow surface to thoroughly dry before proceeding.

If the surface that is to be finished with the 9000 Series Polyurethane is a grain-filling type glaze, sealer or paste; ensure that the systems are compatible with one another by preparing a test panel before proceeding. Certain solvent-based fillers may prevent proper adhesion of the topcoat if not thoroughly cured. Ensure that grain fillers have been sanded with a minimum of 320-grit sandpaper and all contamination is removed.

Spray apply each coat of 9000 Series Super-Clear Polyurethane with HVLP, conventional or airless/air-assist spray equipment. Consult with your spray equipment supplier for proper gun set-up based on coating viscosity. Recommended wet coat film thickness should not exceed 4mils.

1. 9000 Series Polyurethane can be sprayed without reducing with SA5 Retarder or water, however, the addition of SA5 Retarder is recommended to slow-down the system during high temperature/low humidity applications, or when sprayed with a turbine-driven HVLP unit. Additions of 5% of SA5 Retarder will alter the dry time and improve flow and leveling.
2. Water may be added up to 20% by liquid volume to thin material for wipe-on and brushing applications.
3. Allow each coat to dry for a minimum of 2 hours before applying additional coats of 9000 Series Polyurethane. If the coating has cured for more then 24 hours fine sand with a minimum of 400 grit sandpaper to promote proper adhesion to the cured base coats.
4. Clean all spray equipment with warm, fresh water after each use.
5. Spray operators must wear a NIOSHA approved respirator during the spray application of this material. Consult MSDS for safety and health information.
6. 9000 Series Polyurethane can be wet-sanded and polished after 48 hours. A quality polishing system such as the Manzerna Polishing Compounds can be used to remove imperfections and generate a high-gloss mirror finish.
