As the depth and variety of water-based raw materials continue to grow, coatings formulators are now able to design and produce a wide array of products that are as durable as their solvent-based counterparts but with considerably lower VOC’s and other toxins being emitted into the atmosphere. With these developments, industrial/commercial finishers can now find water-based finishes to meet application requirements ranging from factory applied lacquers to contractor-grade multipurpose varnishes.
One type of product that has been in constant development within the Target Coatings Group is a true alkyd-tone varnish that responds to traditional woods such as cherry, mahogany and walnut in much the same way as solvent-based finishes do. While custom water-based finishes do exist that offer some of these features, most fall short in one or more areas in terms of clarity, solvent-like color tone, chemical resistance, HAP’s reduction and low VOC’s, let alone ease of use in a commercial spray or contractor brush applied application. With these shortcomings as a center point, the staff at Target Coatings has focused on these performance issues during their long tenure in WB product development for custom cabinetmakers, furniture restorers and multi-task finishing professionals. The technology has been slow in coming, with few pieces of the puzzle fitting together easily in terms of performance properties, until we looked at several of our earlier industrial products and compared their performance individually. Once we weeded through each product’s behavior, we then applied old-fashioned Edison Principles of product development- trial and error, which has resulted in our new EM2000wvx Waterborne Alkyd Varnish.
EM2000wvx Waterborne Alkyd Varnish represents the latest technology in water-based wood coatings for architectural, cabinet and specialty wood finishing applications. EM2000wvx will create and define the warm glow of traditional alkyd based varnish with the speed and safety of modern ultra-low VOC water-based systems. Specially formulated for spray and brush-applied applications, EM2000wvx can also be wipe applied when diluted.
EM2000wvx Waterborne Alkyd Varnish is chemically similar to our venerable 7000 Series Hybrid Varnishes. However, continuing with our proprietary EMTECH™ Process, the EM2000wvx offers improved physical and application behaviors such as improved slip, glide and dirt repellence. Also, the new EM2000wvx cures more rapidly, putting it into service faster than its predecessors. With these features, the new EM2000wvx continues to bring together the best features of oil-based varnishes and waterborne urethanes into one unique package.
