Target Coatings Introduces New EMCAT+® System of Water-Based Wood Finishes
1K and 2K Finishes Excel on Challenging Substrates Without Exposure to Toxic Catalysts
Fair Lawn, NJ: Target Coatings, Inc., an innovator of water-based wood finishes for nearly 40 years, announced the launch of its EMCAT+® Acrylic Polymer Coating System lead by a 2K product that performs equal to conventional 2K coatings but without exposing finishers to highly toxic catalysts such as isocyanate and aziridine. The EMCAT+® products include:
EMCAT+® EC2A Acrylic Resin Topcoat and EC2B Catalyst: This two-component (2K) topcoat is the most chemical-resistant finish Target Coatings has ever made. Designed as a replacement for 2K urethanes, EMCAT+® EC2A is not a urethane — it is made from pure, high-MFT acrylic with a unique pH functionality. The EMCAT+® EC2B Catalyst is a safe, silane compound catalyst that does not contain hazardous isocyanate or aziridine.
EMCAT+® Si427 Sealer & Isolator: A single-component (1K) sealer that acts as a “barrier coat” for challenging substrates such as tannic, oily, and fire retardant-treated wood. EMCAT+® Si427 Sealer & Isolator can be used underneath the EC2A topcoat or any Emtech® brand waterborne wood finish to create the same color warmth and depth of solvent-based sealers but without the associated hazards.
“Many finishers don’t realize they are being exposed to extremely hazardous isocyanate or aziridine catalysts when using solvent- or water-based 2K products,” said Jeff Weiss, president and chief chemist at Target Coatings. “EMCAT+® is the culmination of two years of lab work and testing to produce water-based, 1K and 2K finishes with superior adhesion, bonding, versatility, and durability, but without the potentially deadly chemical catalysts found in existing 2K systems.”
The unique features of the EMCAT+® system include:
Clear Acrylic Polymers: EMCAT+® is formulated with extremely clear, high-MFT water-based acrylic polymers that have a cationic molecular charge. This allows the resin to bond more strongly, harder, and faster to “challenging” substrates compared to traditional 2K urethane waterborne coatings.
Enhanced Wood Color: The EMCAT+® system allows natural wood fibers to exhibit their natural colors similarly to traditional solvent-based coatings but without the associated flammable hazards.
Versatile Application & Rapid Cure: The EMCAT+® system can be used on natural wood surfaces, including dense, oily woods, synthetic substrates, and metals such as stainless steel and brass. It can also be applied over surfaces previously finished with conventional (i.e., anionic) coatings. EMCAT+® chemistry allows for a rapid cure cycle of 24 hours when applied properly.
Safety and Environmental Benefits: The EMCAT+® system does not use highly toxic isocyanate or aziridine catalysts typically found in waterborne 2K coatings. The EMCAT+® system uses safer, proprietary blend of silane compounds to function as the catalyst.
The EMCAT+® Acrylic Polymer Coating System is ideal for any finisher who uses 2K coatings and seeks maximum protection and finishing speed. It can be applied using professional-grade spray equipment and automated coating applicators, making it suitable for a wide range of interior and light-duty exterior surfaces that require a durable protective finish.
About Target Coatings: Fair Lawn, NJ-based Target Coatings, developer of the Emtech® series of high-performance water-based coatings, has exclusively manufactured water-based, low-VOC and HAPs-free wood finishes for nearly 40 years and is proud to have developed a number of innovative “firsts,” including the first water-based lacquer to offer 100% burn-in rivaling nitrocellulose lacquer; the first water-based, non-flammable clear shellac sealer; and the first exterior-grade, water-based urethane to be approved by the Master Painters Institute (MPI). President and chief chemist Jeff Weiss is considered one of the founding fathers of water-based wood finishing technology and safety by refusing to accept the “status quo” in conventional water-based design and exposing others to substances he would not want to be exposed to. From its beginnings in boatbuilding, Target Coatings now offers high-performance, non-flammable, water-based finishes for nearly all commercial and “pro consumer” applications, including furniture, cabinetry, millwork, kitchens, bathrooms, tables, countertops, musical instrument making, and DIY woodcrafting.
