NEW for 2020 – The Emtech NR4000 Stain Series replaces the older WR4000 Hybrid Linseed Oil Stains Series.
The NEW NR4000 (NR for Natural Resin) is made with a renewable resource, plant-based resin compound that offers ultra-low VOC emissions and is 100% biodegradable. The NR4000 base contains no hydrocarbon or ethylene based solvents, making it non-combustible and HAPs-Free.
Due to the very small particle size of this unique resin structure, the NR4000 base allows for 100% color transparency in the dye stain versions, as well as excellent wetting and color transfer to the substrate when dye and pigment colorants are used to create translucent colors.
We are now offering the most popular selection of colors from the older WR4000 color palette. These stain colors are based on fade resistant dye colorants – which provide the deep, rich color penetration of previous WR4000 hybrid base but without the hassle of a long tack-time and other behaviors we found to be finicky. To see these colors simply click on the “Color Sample” tab as seen above.
Periodically we will be introducing new colors under the Emtech Designer Series™ of pigment-based wood stains that meet the color requirements of modern furniture and cabinet designers. These Phase Two wood stains will be UV stable and will be well suited for both interior and exterior applications.
Like the previous WR4000, the new Emtech NR4000 Stains will clean up with basic water and mild detergent.
Unlike conventional water based stains that are built upon acrylic resins, and tend to form a film higher up on the substrate fibers, Emtech NR4000 Stains penetrate deeply into the grain pattern, allowing for a color reaction and definition that is identical to historically correct linseed oil-based stains.
The very small particle resin size of the NR4000 allows for the stain to penetrate deeper into the cell structure of the wood, creating color richness and protection that rivals oil-based stains. The Clear Base version can be used to pop the grain figure and color of domestic and exotic hardwoods alike.
Another key feature is user-friendly open-time and rewetting properties of the NR4000 base, which helps to control the lapping and fairing effect commonly found with water based acrylic based stains. The NR4000 produces an exceptionally even finish comparable to oil-based stains.
Emtech NR4000 Stains can be wipe-applied or they can spray-applied without the need to back-brush or buff level.
Emtech NR4000 Stains will generate all the color richness of solvent-based stains, but with the safety and convenience of a water-based system.
Emtech NR4000 Stains are blended with UV absorbers and reflectors, so that the colors remain vivid and true when exposed to UV light.
The Emtech NR4000 Stain Series is primarily designed for furniture and interior architectural applications. Moderate UV exposure for indirect exterior applications will not damage or fade these colors over a short course of time.
The Emtech NR4000 Stain Series is 100% compatible with all Target Coatings water-based wood finishes.

This stain is also another excellent emtech product. Our humidity is so up and down and this stain drys really fast so I have started adding about 30% or more water and 5 to 10% retarder. I use the emtech 1000 sanding sealer first. Then It seems easier for me to mist spray a complete section and have a very damp t-shirt rag ready to wipe off. This stain is easy to maniputlate. Water re-activates it. Wipe some off with a wet rag or add another coat. It seems to work out better for me to let the final coat dry out over night before spraying filler or top coat. After using this new 4000 stain I won’t be using oil stain anymore.

I recently purchased some NR4000 in brown mahogany to use on an old roll-top desk we were updating. The ease of use and rich depth of color quickly told me I had made the right choice. This stuff is incredible. I topcoated it with EM2000 and it looks amazing. Very happy with the results I was able to achieve and look forward to my next opportunity to try some other colors! Great product Jeff, thanks for the hard work in developing it.
