While it may seem like being “green”, respecting—and protecting—the environment and being mindful of harmful chemical irritants in our homes is somewhat of a trend at times, here at Target Coatings, it’s always been at the core of what we do. For 29 years now, we’ve believed in and created water-based coatings to promote the safety and health of our customers and their families, our professional clients and the environment. For example, our ultra-low VOC clear wood finish, EM6000, has a VOC content of just 41 grams per liter (see image). Why is that important?
Well, first off, let’s understand why VOCs—volatile organic compounds—can be so bad. VOCs are emitted as gases from certain solids and liquids. Many common household products release VOCs into the air during use. Some of these include cleaning solutions, disinfectants, air fresheners, aerosol sprays and, yes, paints and solvents.
According to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), VOCs can irritate your eyes, nose and throat, and they can cause you to get headaches. VOCs can also cause damage to the liver, kidneys and central nervous system. And, some VOCs are suspected or known carcinogens in humans. But while it’s important to know what VOCs can do to our health, VOCs also have a tremendously harmful impact on the atmosphere as well.
Some water-based paints are formulated with a solvent of the Ethylene Series of glycols (E-Series). These E-Series solvents create low-level ozone (aka, smog) and can be categorized as Hazardous Air Pollutants, i.e. HAPs . NOT so with the EMTECH Series. Target Coatings formulas are ONLY blended with Propylene Series-based (P-Series) solvents which offer lower environmental and toxicological impact and do not create ozone.
Here at Target Coatings, we know it’s possible to create high-performance architectural coatings without having to expose our customers and clients to unnecessarily high levels of VOCs and HAPs. That’s why EM6000 has a VOC level that’s LESS THAN 10% of the Architectural and Industrial Maintenance (AIM) Coatings Rule for VOC emissions. By law, manufacturers are permitted to have a VOC level of 450 g/l!
